Backyard Kids Club
Some may believe that poverty only exists in foreign countries; that children only go hungry in places we see advertised on television. The truth is America sees its share of families in need. According to a recent USDA study on food insecurity, 14.4% of households in North Carolina experience a prevalence of not having an adequate amount of food. The state is among the top 11 states in the United States where families suffer. In addition to food, these children are often starved for attention and most of all Christ. This is where Backyard Kids Club comes in. To help children by feeding the body, the heart, and the soul.
What is Backyard Kids Club?
Backyard Kids Club is very similar to Sidewalk Sunday School. It is a program primarily designed for children. Teams go into a neighborhood; usually a park, apartment complex, or a trailer park to minister to the children that live in the area.
The ministry consists of several different levels; all targeted at sharing the love of Christ. Backyard Kids Club ministers by:
Feeding the heart – through exciting entertainment such as: Upbeat music with a message to grab their attention and draw them to the meeting area. Fun games to get them involved. Simple crafts to give them something to remember their experience.
Feeding the soul – by introducing children to Jesus through age-appropriate Bible lessons. Kids are taught that there is hope through being a Godly example. They are encouraged to live a Christ-centered life. Ministry is delivered in many forms:
Worship music to give them a foundation; kids will remember a song easier than a verse. Skits and Dramas that deliver a Biblical truth as well as making them laugh. Mini-sermons with a centrally themed verse delivered by the lead minister of the group.
Feeding the body – Children are given a healthy sack lunch that consists of:
Fruits
Vegetables
Protein
Healthy snack or chips
Juice
Through ministering to children, parents are also introduced in the gospel. The teams build relationships with parents through the creation of small groups. They are taught about Christ and given additional instruction on how to connect with a local church.
